Sunday reading: post-truth

Post truth

We are given  a Sunday reading task on understanding the concept  of 'post -truth' by Dr. Dilip barad sir, this  blog related the task.

Oxford  University selects a word every  as the word of the year.  Here we are discussing a  word chosen in 2016 'post -truth.'

The  compound word  post -truth exemplifies an expansion in the meaning of the prefix post that has become  increasingly  prominent  in recent years.  Rather than simply referring to the time after a specified situation  or event  as in post -war or post match -the prefix in post truth  has a meaning more like 'belonging to a time in which  the specified  concept  has become  unimportant  or irrelevant.'

This nuance seems to have originated in the mid - 20th century, in formations such as post- national (1945) and post - racial (1971).Post - truth seems to have been first used in this meaning in a 1992 essay by the late Serbian- American  play Wright  Steve tesich In the nation magazine.

Simplest form 'post -truth is where logical  facts become less important than Emotional feelings.     Truth  is a function of trust and pertains to the authority  of the source.

The collapse  of trust in our leading  institutions has exiled the 21st century  to the Siberia of post - truth. I want to be clear about  what this means. Reality has not changed. It's still unyielding.  Facts today are partial and contradictory - but that's always  been the case. Post -truth, as I define it, signifies a moment of sharply divergent perspective on every subject or event, without a trusted authority in the room to settle the matter.

Emotional  truth and actual actual truth.

Today we have got a cultural trend to place Emotional truth over logical truth. Post truth is where logical facts become less  important than Emotional feelings.  Post - truth is not a lie, it's a public relation with false or things which are not true also we can say it is about people not true also we can say it is about people  not  valuing the truth. Post truth is not news/views, it is a contradiction  between  what you want to hear, knowing  it's  false and then deciding  'This is true.'

Post - truth and politics

Post truth politics also called Post- factual politics  and Post reality politics.  Post truth politics is a subset of the broader  term Post- truth, which has historical  roots

As of 2018, political commentators have identified  Post-truth  politics  as  ascendant  in many nations, notably  Australia, Brazil, China, India, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among other.  As with other  areas  of debate, this is being driven by a combination  of the 24 hour news cycle, false balance in news reporting, and the increasing ubiquity of social media and  fake  news website.  In  2016, post -truth was chosen as the Oxford dictionaries' word of the year  due to its prevalence in the context of that year's Brexit referendum  and media  coverage of the US presidential election.

Social media and truth

Post truth is a new concept  for  the people  of 21st century.   It  is a philosophical  and political ideology for " the disappearance of shared objectives  standards for truth"  truth  is an  essential part  of the information to make positive  impact for making  responsible society.  It believes  on emotion, false perceptions and personal  belief  rather than facts,  truth and social reality. Every  person  in society has been misusing all forms of media including  social media.  Out of them Facebook,  Twitter/ Instagram/ YouTube/ WhatsApp etc  are especially misused to extend the power of regime.

The academic discussion  initiated in 1990s  was a broader vision  with historical transformation  of media systems  and journalism  among the world societies  has been a hot burning issues  amplified in the American presidential  election in 2016. Because  of the huge popularity of the term "post-truth", It was recommended as a word of the year  in Oxford  dictionary  for 2016 which was deeply misused in the American media.

"I think of post - truth as a tactic that's  used by authoritarian and their wannabes to control the flow of information  so that they can them control the populace."

               -Lee McIntyre

The  truth is truth has never been high on the agenda of homo sapient. If you stick to unalloyed reality, few people  will follow  you. False stories have an intrinsic  advantage  over the truth when it comes to uniting people.  If you want to gauge  group loyalty, requiring  people  to believe  an absurdity is a far better  test than asking them to believe  the truth.  If the chief  says  the  sun rises in the west and sets in the east,  only true loyalists will clap their hands. Similarly, if all your neighbors  believe the same  outrageous  tale, you can count on them to  stand  together in times of crisis. If they are willing to believe  only  accredited facts, what does that prove?
